Architrave is the moulding that covers the joint between the door lining and the plaster. It is a finishing item, but it is the one people actually see from across a room, so the profile and the finish should be chosen at the same time as the door rather than picked up at the end of the job.
Matching architrave to the room
Keep the profile consistent with the skirting so the two mitre together cleanly at floor level, and match the timber or the paint colour to the leaf. Ogee and torus profiles suit period rooms; square-edge and chamfered profiles suit modern interiors.
Order it alongside the internal frame and the matching skirting. Where you are panelling the walls as well, see wall panelling and traditional wall panels. Fire rated openings need a certified frame from fire doors.
