Internal Oak Doors

Oak is the default internal door in Britain, and for good reason. It is warm without being dark, it hides scuffs better than paint, it suits both a 1900s hallway and a new extension, and it is the finish most likely to still look deliberate when you come to sell. How oak internal doors are built

Almost every oak door on the market is engineered rather than carved from solid boards. A stable core, usually a particle or solid timber composite, is faced with real oak veneer and edged with a solid oak lipping. That construction is deliberate: solid oak moves with humidity and a full solid leaf in a centrally heated hallway would cup and stick within a season. The lipping matters when you are ordering, because a lipped door gives you a few extra millimetres of trimming allowance and a cleaner edge once hung.

What varies between doors is the veneer. Some ranges use a lively, strongly figured oak and some use a quiet, straight grained cut. Two doors described as oak from different manufacturers will rarely match across a landing, which is the single most important practical point on this page. Order all the doors for one floor at the same time, from the same brand and the same range.

Fully finished or unfinished

190 of these doors arrive fully finished, which means the lacquer is already on and the door can be hung and left alone. 82 are unfinished. Unfinished costs less per leaf and lets you match an existing stain or go lighter or darker than the factory colour, but it adds real work: every face and all four edges, including the top and bottom, need sealing before the door is hung. Glazed and solid

119 of the oak doors here carry glass and 169 are solid. Oak with clear glazing is the standard answer to a dark hallway, because the frame reads as timber while the panel lets light through from the room behind. Oak fire doors

More than 110 doors in this collection are fire rated, 80 of them FD30. That matters because oak is often wanted on exactly the doors that need a rating, such as the leaf between an integral garage and a hallway, or the doors off a stairwell after a loft conversion. Popular designs

A handful of designs account for most oak door sales. Mexicano and Coventry use vertical grooves for a contemporary look that suits open plan spaces. Belize and Carini run multiple slim vertical panels. Seville and Iseo are cleaner and flatter. Regency and Lincoln keep a more traditional panelled arrangement. Blonde and brushed variants shift the tone lighter or add texture, which is worth knowing if you want oak without the orange note that older lacquers had. Flush oak doors are the plainest option and disappear into a wall.

Sizes

Standard oak internal doors are 35mm thick. Imperial widths of 686mm and 762mm at 1981mm high cover most rooms, with 610mm and 533mm for cupboards, and metric 2040mm heights in newer housing. Living with oak

Oak darkens slightly in daylight over the first year or two, which is normal and evens out. Clean it with a damp cloth rather than a household spray, and keep silicone polish away from a lacquered surface. Choosing between oak and the alternatives

White painted doors are brighter, cheaper and better suited to a small flat or a room with panelling. Walnut is darker and reads more formal. Both are legitimate choices and both are stocked, at internal white primed doors and internal walnut doors. Common questions

Are these doors solid oak?

They are engineered doors with a real oak veneer and a solid oak lipping over a stable core. That is what the whole market supplies, and it is the correct construction for a heated house.

Will two oak doors from different brands match?

Not reliably. Buy a floor at a time from one range.

Can an oak door be painted?

An unfinished one can, after priming. A fully finished lacquered door needs the lacquer keyed back first and is rarely worth the effort.

Which handles suit oak?
