Reeded Glazed Doors

Reeded glass is fluted, with vertical ribs moulded into the pane. It distorts the view without blocking the light, and because the ribbing is a period pattern it works in Victorian hallways and Art Deco interiors as comfortably as it does in a new kitchen extension.

Reeded, frosted or clear?

Reeded gives you decoration plus partial privacy. Frosted glass obscures more evenly and is the better bathroom choice; clear glass gives maximum light and no privacy at all; tinted glass darkens rather than obscures.

Why reeded glass is everywhere again

Reeded or fluted glass has vertical ribs moulded into the surface. Light passing through is stretched into soft vertical streaks, so the pane glows without giving a clear view, and the ribs catch highlights in a way that flat frosted glass cannot. It is a detail borrowed from mid-century and Art Deco interiors and it has become one of the defining features of contemporary UK kitchens, studies and hallways.

How it behaves in a room

Reeded glass reads as texture rather than as obscured glass, which is why it works on a door between two living spaces where full frosting would feel like a bathroom. Privacy is moderate: shapes and movement are visible, detail is not. The rib direction matters visually, and vertical reeding on a tall leaf reinforces the height of the opening. In a narrow hall the effect of light broken across the ribs makes the space feel less enclosed.

Specifying and alternatives

All glass in an internal door is toughened or laminated safety glass, supplied factory-glazed.
