Traditional wall panels reproduce the joinery of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian interiors: dado rails, raised and fielded panels, and stiles and rails that give a wall real depth. In a period house they restore what was stripped out; in a modern one they give a plain box the proportion it never had.
Setting out a period panelled wall
Decide the rail height first, since that single line controls how the wall reads, then divide the width into equal bays so no panel is left narrow in a corner. The panelling has to sit correctly on the skirting, so specify both together.
For plainer contemporary profiles see wall panelling, and where noise is the issue see acoustic wall panels. Match the room with skirting, door architraves and a period leaf from 4 panel or 6 panel doors.
