Fire Doors

A fire door is a life safety product, not a style choice. Its job is to hold a fire inside one room for long enough that everyone else can get out, which is why it is thicker, heavier and more tightly controlled than an ordinary internal door. FD30 and FD60

The number is minutes of tested fire resistance. An FD30 door holds back fire for 30 minutes and is 44mm thick. An FD60 door holds back fire for 60 minutes and is 54mm thick. We stock 157 FD30 doors and 8 FD60 doors, and FD30 covers the overwhelming majority of domestic work. FD60 belongs in commercial buildings, in larger blocks of flats and wherever a fire strategy or building control officer has specified it. You will also see an S suffix, as in FD30S. The S means the doorset includes smoke seals as well as intumescent strips, because fire and smoke are two different problems. Smoke kills sooner than flame, and most flat entrance doors and many stairwell doors are specified as FD30S.

Where a fire door is normally required

The common domestic cases in England and Wales are the door between an integral garage and the house, doors from habitable rooms onto a protected stairway in a three storey home or after a loft conversion, and doors throughout flats, houses in multiple occupation and rented property. Requirements differ across the UK nations and depend on the specific building, so treat this as orientation rather than a specification. The door is only part of the answer

A fire rating applies to a complete assembly, not to a leaf on its own. Hanging a certified door in the wrong frame with the wrong ironmongery produces something that looks compliant and is not. A working FD30 doorset needs all of the following specified together.

A certified door leaf, with its label or plug usually on the top or hanging edge. A frame or lining deep enough for the leaf, from internal frames. Intumescent strips, and smoke seals where an S rating applies, from intumescent strips and pads. Three hinges rather than two, and they must be fire rated, so see fire rated hinges. A latch or lock rated for the assembly, plus intumescent pads behind the ironmongery. And a self closer where one is required, from door closers. Gaps matter too: a nominal 3mm gap around the leaf is the usual target, and a large threshold gap will let smoke through even when the door is perfect.

Solid or glazed

194 of these doors are solid and 53 carry fire rated glass. Glazing in a fire door is not ordinary glass, it is a tested fire resistant unit in a tested bead, and it cannot be substituted or reglazed on site. A vision panel is genuinely useful on a kitchen or stairwell door because it lets you see whether the far side is safe before opening. Finishes and colours

Fire doors no longer have to look institutional. Oak is the largest group with more than 110 doors, followed by white primed at 33, black at 25, grey at 22 and walnut at 17. 130 arrive fully finished and 23 are unfinished for site staining. Fitting rules that catch people out

Do not trim beyond the stated allowance. Fire doors carry a small, specific trimming tolerance and cutting past it voids the certification, which is the most common mistake on a self managed job. Do not remove or paint over intumescent strips. Do not fit a two hinge set. Do not swap the supplied glazing. Keep the label intact, because it is the only on site evidence of what the door is. Common questions

Can a fire door be held open?

Not with a wedge. Where a door genuinely needs to stay open, a hold open device linked to the alarm is the only acceptable route.

Does the frame need replacing as well?

Usually yes, because an existing 35mm lining will not carry a 44mm leaf or house the seals correctly.

Can a fire door be painted?

Yes, with a normal decorative system on the faces, keeping paint off the intumescent strips and the certification label.

How long do fire doors last?

Indefinitely if undamaged, but they should be inspected regularly for gaps, damaged seals, missing screws and a closer that no longer shuts the door.

Is a fire door worth fitting where it is not required?

Often, yes. A 44mm solid leaf is quieter, feels better and resists damage, which is why some buyers choose them for bedrooms even with no obligation. The rest of the range is at internal doors.
