Glazed Fire Doors

A glazed fire door carries a vision panel of certified fire-resistant glass within a rated leaf, so it protects the escape route while letting people see through it. Vision panels are required on many commercial corridor and cross-corridor doors, and they are useful at home wherever a fire door would otherwise make a hallway dark.

Why the glass cannot be swapped

The glass, the bead and the leaf are certified together as one tested assembly, so a pane can never be cut in on site or substituted for standard toughened glass. Order the door as manufactured, then add intumescent strips and smoke seals, fire rated hinges and a door closer where self-closing is required.

Glass in a fire door: how it works

A glazed fire door uses fire rated glass held in a tested glazing system, not ordinary safety glass in a normal bead. That is the whole difference. The glass, the beading, the intumescent glazing tape and the leaf were tested together, which is why the glazing on a rated door cannot be swapped for standard glass and cannot be re-beaded with whatever is to hand.

When to choose a glazed rated leaf

The usual case is a hallway or stairwell that has to be rated but would be dark with a solid leaf, or a doorway where you want to see whether someone is coming the other way. If the rating matters but the light does not, a solid leaf from internal solid fire doors is cheaper and simpler. The internal-only versions are grouped in internal glazed fire doors.

Matching finishes across the landing

Rated glazed leaves are made in the same finishes as the standard doors, so the rated doorway does not have to stand out: compare oak fire doors, white fire doors, grey fire doors, black fire doors and walnut fire doors, then match the unrated doors from glazed doors.

Hardware and installation

A glazed rated leaf is the heaviest door in most houses, so the hinges have to be rated for it: use fire rated hinges with intumescent strips and pads, and a door closer where one is required. FD30 vs FD60 fire doors and the fire door guide cover the specification.

Can I have obscure or frosted glass in a fire door?

Only where that glass is part of a tested system for the leaf. Do not substitute a standard obscure pane.

Does the glass reduce the rating?

Not when it is the tested glazing for that door. The rating belongs to the whole assembly, glass included.
