Clear Glazed Doors

A clear glazed door uses untinted, unobscured toughened glass, so it passes the maximum amount of daylight and keeps a clear line of sight between rooms. It is the right choice for dark hallways, landings, through-lounges and kitchen-diners where the aim is to make a space feel larger and better lit.

When clear glass is the wrong choice

Because there is no obscuration, avoid clear glass on bathrooms, WCs, bedrooms and home offices. Use frosted glazed doors, reeded glass or tinted glass in those rooms instead, or an unglazed door where privacy is absolute.

Clear glass, and when it is the right choice

Clear glazed doors are the ones to use when the job of the door is to move daylight from one room to another. A single clear pane in a hallway door will light a windowless landing, and a pair of clear glazed doors between a kitchen and a dining room keeps the two spaces connected while still closing off noise and cooking smells. Where you want the light but not the view, look at frosted glazed doors, reeded glazed doors or tinted glazed doors instead. Safety glass and where glass is required to be toughened

Glass in a door is in a critical location, so it is supplied as safety glass. Matching the rest of the house

Cleaning and living with glass

Use a non-abrasive glass cleaner and avoid letting cleaner sit on the beading or the timber around the pane. On painted leaves, water left along the bead line will lift paint over time.

Are clear glazed internal doors private enough for a bathroom?

No. For a bathroom or WC use a solid leaf, or a frosted or reeded pane. Clear glass belongs on hallways, living rooms, kitchens and studies.

Do glazed doors reduce sound insulation?

Slightly, compared with a solid core leaf of the same range, but far less than most people expect. If acoustics are the priority, look at solid fire doors or add acoustic wall panels to the room.

Can the glass be replaced if it breaks?

On most beaded leaves yes, with like-for-like safety glass. On a fire door the glazing is part of the tested assembly and must be replaced to the same specification.
