Glazed External Doors

A glazed external door has to do two jobs a glazed internal door does not: keep heat in and keep intruders out. That means double-glazed, toughened or laminated units set into a weather-sealed frame, with a U-value that satisfies Approved Document L and hardware rated for external use.

What to check before ordering

Confirm the handing, the frame rebate and whether the door is fully finished or needs sealing on all six faces before it goes outside. Glass area is a trade-off: more glazing gives a brighter hallway, less glazing gives better security and thermal performance.

Light at the front of the house

A glazed external door brings daylight into the one part of a British house that usually has none: the entrance hall. Because the glazing is in a door that has to keep out weather and intruders, the specification matters more than it does on an internal leaf. Look for factory-glazed units, laminated or toughened safety glass, and a leaf built as an engineered or laminated core rather than solid softwood, which moves too much in a doorway that faces the weather.

Security, glass and thermal performance

Glazed area is a security question as much as a design one, so a small obscured pane at head height behaves very differently from a full-height clear light. External doors are handed, so decide which way the door opens and which side the hinges sit before ordering, and measure the structural opening rather than the existing frame.
