Finishing unfinished doors

Unfinished doors must be sealed on all six faces — front, back and all four edges — before installation, including any cut-outs for hinges, locks and letter plates.

Internal doors

Use an oil-based varnish or paint. Apply the number of coats the manufacturer recommends. Do not use waxes or penetrating oils as the sole method of sealing.

External doors

Use a microporous, breathable oil-based finish. Re-coat periodically. Dark colours absorb more heat and may require more frequent maintenance.

Storage before fitting

Store doors flat, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Do not store in a newly plastered or damp building.

Timber movement

Timber is a natural material and responds to changes in temperature and humidity. Minor variations in colour and grain are characteristic of real timber.
