Before you start

Always read the instructions supplied with the specific product. Manufacturer instructions take precedence over anything on this page, and following them is normally a condition of the manufacturer warranty.

Storage and acclimatisation

Timber products move with the moisture in their surroundings. Store them flat, clear of the floor, in a dry and normally heated space, and allow them to acclimatise before fitting. Avoid newly plastered or newly screeded rooms until they have dried out.

Finishing

Unfinished doors should be sealed on all six faces, including the top and bottom edges, before or immediately after hanging. Sealing the faces but leaving the edges bare allows uneven moisture movement.

Trimming

Every door has a manufacturer stated trimming allowance. Cutting beyond it can expose the core or affect performance. Take equal amounts from opposite edges where possible, and check the allowance before you cut.

Fire doors

A fire door performs as part of a complete assembly with its frame, seals, hinges and any closer. Do not substitute components, and confirm the specification and installation requirements with your local building control officer. See our Fire Door Guide.
