6 Panel Internal Doors

The six panel door splits the leaf into two rows of three, giving a shorter, wider panel proportion than the Victorian four panel pattern. It is the traditional door of choice for cottages, bungalows and any room with a lower ceiling, where a tall two-over-two arrangement would look stretched.

Choosing a six panel door

Raised and fielded panels give the strongest period look; flat panels give a calmer, more modern face. White primed is the standard finish for painted joinery and oak for stained trim. Glazed variants replace the upper panels with glass, listed in glazed doors.

The default door of the British house

The six panel door is the pattern most people picture when they think of an internal door, and it is the one fitted to more UK homes than any other. Two panels across and three down gives a symmetrical, well-proportioned face that suits Victorian, Edwardian, inter-war and modern estate housing equally, which is why it remains the safest choice when you are replacing some doors but not all of them.

Moulded six panel doors press the panel profile into a skin over a hollow or particleboard core, and they are the budget option for bedrooms and cupboards.
